St Luke’s Project Update October 2022
St Lukes Mission Station is situated on the N6 National Road about 60km inland from East London. At the 2019 Synod of Cape Church held at St Andrews Lutheran Church in East London – the synod adopted this project as a project of the whole Cape Church.
Feeding scheme:
with the assistance of the LWF (Lutheran World Federation) we were able to continue the feeding scheme for the last two years 2020 and 2021. With the monthly bulk food deliveries 3 to 4 meals were provided weekly to these households. Malnutrition is very noticeable within the younger children and unemployment of the guardians on the increase. These meals were normally cooked on open fire, but with funds released from Cape Church – gas hob and cylinders were purchased. The community has stated building the kitchen. We are trying to assist the community in helping them to finish build the kitchen by seeking funding. We are also currently busy trying to apply for funding to assist with the feeding scheme.
School going Children:
With the help of the FSKT (Friedrich Schweizer Kinderheim Trust) generous donation in the beginning of 2022 we were able to help the children to attend school daily, as previously only those with uniforms or rotational uniforms attended classes. Stationary for school children in our poorer communities is a big concern in the Eastern Cape. It is expected that children supply their own stationary. We as the Coastal Parish are focusing “Back to School Stationary Shoeboxes Project” for the 2023 School year for the St Luke’s Children.
The estimated cost for a Back to School Shoebox is R200.00. We are also collecting outgrown school/sports clothes, used pencil crayons & writing paper, school bags, anything and everything that could assist a child with their schooling. We therefore would like to ask the congregations of the Cape Church to please support the Back to School Project for 2023.
