Spreading Hope on the Cape Flats

December 2024

In early December 2024, I hosted the first Hope on the Cape Flats pro-gram, inspired by the peacebuilding skills I learned in Cambodia earlier this year through the Lutheran World Federation (LWF).

The Cape Flats, an area deeply affected by gangsterism, often feels hopeless. This program aimed to remind teens that hope is still within reach. Over three days, young people from Mitchell’s Plain and Philippi joined us in a space where they could dream, reflect, and plan for their futures.

Each morning began with a devotion on hope, grounding us for the day ahead. On the first day, the teens participated in a Dream Tree exercise inspired by the story of exile in Jeremiah. They drew trees and wrote their hopes for the future on the branches.

The second day featured a creative writing workshop led by poet Jerome Coetzee, who encouraged the teens to explore their dreams and even name their future businesses. On the final day, photographer Tyron De Villiers shared his story of resilience growing up on the Cape Flats, inspiring everyone to believe in their potential.

One participant, Tiarah (17), dreams of becoming a beautician “to help women feel good about themselves.” Another, Ashlyn (17), hopes to share the peace he finds in music with others.

This program reminded me that hope doesn’t just survive – it spreads. Even in the toughest circumstances, dreaming of a better future can transform lives.

As I reflect on this journey, I am grateful for the opportunity to plant seeds of hope in our community. I look forward to hosting more programs like this and invite anyone who wants to support or get involved to reach out.
