Camp Hope 2024 You Belong
September 25-29
September 25-29, an incredible group of young people and leaders from various congregations came together at the beautiful Kijk in de Pot, Stellenbosch, to explore the theme “You Belong.” This year, we had participants from all over, including:
Teens and leaders from Southern Cape, Stellenbosch, Phillipi, and St. Martini congregations, also Strand Street teens, including 15 from SA Kinderhuis with their social workers. Friends from iThemba Labantu and the Catholic congregation.
In four insightful sessions, we dived into the heart of what it means to belong to the heavenly kingdom. We explored how faith in Jesus places us in two worlds: one where we are God’s children and another where we still navigate the challenges of everyday life. Using the parable of the hidden treasure, we were reminded that we are the treasure – and God gave everything to make us His own.
On a reflective hike, we learned how important it is to speak kindly to each other and ensure that our actions align with our words. Lastly, we looked at the importance of the church community and how it can be a source of strength for us.
Despite the cold and occasional rain, we enjoyed a campfire only once in the open air but that didn’t stop our storyteller, Bernhard Schiele, from weaving a tale of mystery with “Jack and the Gemstone,” which he wrote especially for this camp.
Friday evening was a fun-filled showcase of talent, as many of the campers participated in a lively talent show, sharing their unique skills and creativity.
As a creative activity, we crafted beautiful mosaic crosses – one for each of our churches and one to take home as a personal reminder of this meaningful time.
The weekend was rounded off with a powerful combined Sunday church service, gathering families and members from all our congregations to reflect on the book of Hebrews 13:8-9: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” This reminder lies at the core of what it means to belong to the Christian community – our hearts are strengthened by grace.
Thanks to a 5-star kitchen and top-notch facilitators, we all went home with full and well-rounded tummies. Our minds opened and ignited on how “we can belong” – and help “others to belong” too.
Watch this space for our 3rd CCW Annual Camp of Hope in December 2025!
