Between Knowledge and Encounter

Reflections on the Preacher Training Course

The current preacher training course, led by Pastor Claudia Nolte-Schamm, was originally intended as a space for those preparing to become lay-preachers in our church or for preachers to brush up on their knowledge and skills. However, it has grown into something broader: a journey of learning, discovery, and shared reflection open to anyone interested in deepening their understanding of Scripture, Lutheran theology and the life of faith.

The group itself is wonderfully diverse. Some participants bring with them many years of experience in congregational life. Others are only just beginning to explore their calling and how they might become more involved. And the reasons for joining the course are just as varied: while a few have a clear goal of becoming (or continuing to be) lay preachers, most are here simply to learn, to broaden their perspective, and to discern what comes next for them.

Much of the course so far has taken place online. These sessions are rich in content, focused on biblical texts and theological insight. They are intentionally structured to provide participants with a foundation of inside knowledge—a deeper grasp of faith and Scripture. Yet what people do with that knowledge, how it connects with their lives and congregations, is often less visible.

In response to this, new online conversation sessions are now also being offered. These are designed not around structured teaching, but around open dialogue. They are a chance to speak more personally, to share reflections, and to explore how this learning takes shape in real life and community. Less input—more exchange. A space for questions, stories, and mutual encouragement.

These sessions are open to anyone in the course who feels the need to talk things through—not just to know what the Bible says, but to consider how it might come alive in their own context.
